Managing Students in a Tech Enhanced Environment

1. How would or do you arrange for and track student time on the computers to guarantee equal access?
2. What classroom procedures might you establish to ensure that all students are contributing to the project, staying on task, and working productively when using the computer?
3. What procedures could you have in place to ensure that students who need assistance when working on the computer get the help they need? How might you do this without interupting instruction or other activities that may be happening in the classroom?

Please "comment" to these three questions.

As in any endeavor setting the tone and the expectations is key. Harry Wong the classroom management guru talked at great length about establishing and maintaining a regular set of expectations. With computer usage I believe the same to be true. The impact of a limited amount of time makes the monitoring of time imperative. I would attempt to create a schedule so that all students in class have the opportunity to have approximately the same amount of time. As in all group work, roles might be applied and at very least, a plan of procedure should be created by the group. Blogging, q and a periods, teacher monitoring, and creating a climate that allows for students to admit they are having problems will allow for completion of the assignments. jr

1. For me it is pretty simple since I generally have up to four students in my class at one. I currently have access to student desktop computers and easily get extras from the library.
2. Since my groups are small, we don't do many group activities, each student is responsible for their own product. Monitoring student progress will be continuous.
3. In a small group it should not be too difficult. Being available to answer questions will be key.
Since my groups are small, individual assistance should not be a problem.

1. Set up a time slot for each student and set the timer so they know when their time is up.

2.Simple checklist and teacher observation.

3. Student mentor.

1. I have four student computers in my classroom - personally I have never conducted a computer project without having enough for each student. I have had it when a student has been absent and needs to finish things up and then they can use the computer during other presentations.
It would be very easy for me to put a time sheet at each computer since they are they are in different areas of the classroom.
2. Set a time schudule and then do a rotation so that everyone gets the same amount of time -- if there is time leftover, then students can finish up what they need to do.
3. Make sure that each group has a computer "expert". If it individual project then use the neighbor procedure.

1.I will not use computers because technology drives me CRAZY! Actually I only have one student computer in my classroom and I only use it for AR testing. In my smaller Ext. class - they sometimes use it for research if all work is finished. This was a small class so it was not a problem.
2. Group manager and journaling
3.I like the ideas I have heard this week of asking another group/group member before asking the teacher. When doing a group project I speak with each of the groups during each class time so hopefully this would answer some of their questions.

1. I would assign an amount of time to use computer during class time.
2. Again, they only have a certain amount of time to work on the computer. Also, I would assign a daily task to be completed.
3. Buddy system

I group the students because of the limited computers I have, then set time limits for each.
I also go to the computer lab.

Journal entries, peer evaluation

I use peers, groupings, sign up sheets, and tap the teacher.
